Working Towards A Better Built Environment: The Architect Award Winners of 2010

In the last few years, construction has somewhat slowed down, with only a few of the best firms creating built masterpieces, that are a mixture of great practical design, art and culture. Even though building has somewhat stagnated, there are still a great number of architectural achievements that have wowed? the world.

Our first champion firm to ?wow? the world in 2010, was the IPB challenge winner, Goedfroo & Goedfroo architecten who designed a sustainable hall and office. The IPB challenge, a competition for green architects who design offices and schools saw this firm win with a modern white wash building that was private and protective. Open spaces in-between and stainless steel like gills, which give users the oxygen they need, also gave the building a feeling of light airiness.

The Jencks award, awarded by the RIBA (British architects) is only awarded to those who have contributed significantly to the theory and practice of architecture. Exploring senses, different modes and cultural ideas, Stephen Holl has been celebrated for their consideration of ideas that revolutionise the way we think and design. Enlightening us about communal areas, the playing of light and colours, he has created a new form of architecture that considers the greater potentiality of aesthetics.

The MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards 2010 also awarded the category for master planning and regeneration to the Copenhagen Harbour redevelopment in Denmark. The architect firm FXFOWLE, recreated the harbour with a more holistic view that incorporated urban design with the interflowing energies of the waterways. They metamorphosised a purely industrial dockland into an urban area that would work for commercial and neighbourhood use.

Winning the sustainability award in the MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards 2010, was a building that created the aesthetics of sustainability whilst producing more energy that it could consume!
